With a long-time involvement in choral music (formerly a member of the Auckland Anglican Cathedral Choir and Dorian Choir, and occasional participant in other choirs), Chris is currently a member and deputy conductor of the chamber choir Orlando Singers. He has also developed a keen floricultural interest in orchids, for over 20 years a member of North Shore Orchid Society, producer of that society's monthly magazine since 1994, president of the society 2004-2008. A special interest is "slipper" (paphiopedilum) orchids; and he produces a quarterly magazine for the NZ Paphiopedilum Alliance. He is an accredited judge of the Orchid Council of New Zealand, the New Zealand Orchid Society, and the Cymbidium Society of America orchid judging systems. Another interest, though sadly too seldom indulged, is overseas travel, with particular interest in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands.
