Israel is a partner in the Property and Private Client team and is head of trusts and succession planning. He specialises in family succession planning and wealth preservation and has over 14 years’ experience in this niche area.

He advises on trusts, wills, estates, international and cross-border succession planning, trust and estate administration, matrimonial/relationship property agreements and philanthropy. He is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the Trust Special Interest Group (Chartered Accountants Australia + New Zealand).
Israel helps clients to preserve family assets and keep them in safe custody. He helps clients to create robust succession plans using family trusts, charitable trusts, wills, enduring powers of attorney, memoranda of wishes, family charters, matrimonial/relationship property agreements and other legal instruments.   
Israel provides practical advice to families, business owners, entrepreneurs, investors, professionals, directors and senior executives, professional trustees, philanthropists, charities and other persons requiring quality advice on trust, estate and succession planning issues. He helps clients to manage risks associated with the long term management and custodianship of assets, economic downturns and financial crisis, relationship break-down, family disputes, retirement, loss of mental capacity, death, the provision of inheritances and charitable giving. 
Previous work includes:
  • Creating family succession plans for families wanting to preserve and transfer family wealth to their children and other family or friends after retirement or in the event of death or loss of mental capacity (including setting up family trusts, preparing wills and enduring powers of attorney, documenting the family succession plan, gifting assets to family trusts and preparing related legal documents).
  • Creating family trusts for business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals to manage and preserve wealth in the event of an economic downturn, financial crisis or relationship break-up (including setting up family trusts, advising on creditor protection legislation, gifting assets to family trusts and preparing matrimonial/relationship property agreements).
  • Creating inter-generational family succession plans for families wanting to preserve family wealth, property and businesses for the benefit of a number of generations.
  • Advising clients on and finding solutions to issues or disputes arising out of the management and distribution of family wealth, trust funds and deceased estates.
  • Reviewing, updating or simplifying existing trust structures and succession plans as clients’ circumstances change.
  • Advising clients moving to or from New Zealand on international and cross-border trust, estate and succession planning issues (including reviewing existing trusts, wills and succession planning and adapting them to clients’ new circumstances).
  • Advising clients residing overseas on international succession planning, trust structuring and investment holding vehicles in New Zealand. 
  • Advising on and preparing matrimonial/relationship property agreements in circumstances where there are family trusts or complex estate planning issues involved.
  • Advising trustees on trust administration issues, trustee decision-making, the interpretation and effect of trust deeds, amending trust deeds, the wind up of trusts and distribution of trust assets.
  • Advising executors on the administration of deceased estates.
  • Providing advice and litigation support for contentious trust and estate related disputes.
  • Advising on philanthropy, establishing charitable trusts and registering them with Internal Affairs.
  • Advising charities on restructuring issues and amendments to their rules.
Israel is married with three young children. He is from a large diverse New Zealand family that goes back six generations. One side of his family is from the Pacific Islands and he enjoys travelling to the islands for holidays. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with family and friends and being involved with the community. He also enjoys sport, coaches his son’s cricket team and plays golf (when time allows). He has an interest in entrepreneurship and innovation and enjoys following his clients’ endeavours in this space.
