Richard has recently moved into a consultant role after over 50 years as a partner in the firm. During his more than 50 years in legal practice, Richard has gained wide experience and developed expertise in most areas of private client work but particularly in respect of the sale, purchase, development, financing and leasing of property; company matters; business transactions; and trusts, wills and estates.

As the practice of law has become more specialised, Richard’s time is now concentrated on trust work (including an extensive involvement with offshore trusts including as a director of many trustee companies), wills, enduring powers of attorney, supervision of estate administration and property work, and an extensive practice as a notary.

Richard has a law degree from Auckland University and has worked in Jackson Russell since 1961. He became a partner in 1966 and a consultant in 2017. He is a member of the International Bar Association and The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners based in London, and was the first New Zealand director on the World Organisation of Notaries.
Previous work includes:
  • The ongoing establishment of foreign trusts and the New Zealand companies that act as trustees. This includes, over a 10 year period, the direct management of and allocations from a trust fund held for the benefit of former employees of a large European business and the direct wind-up of a multi-million dollar Swiss Trust.
  • The trusteeship of many estates and private trusts of Jackson Russell clients. This requires regular involvement in decisions on investments, distributions and management issues in a highly contentious area of law.
  • Chairmanship of the Charities, The Auckland Sailors’ Home and The Elam Trust for Art and Design Board, and involvement as trustee with other charitable trusts.
  • Advice to clients and staff in respect of property matters and estate administration.
  • After 10 years as President of the Auckland District Society of Notaries and the first President of the New Zealand Society of Notaries Inc., Richard is frequently called upon to advise on notarial issues and regularly meets the needs of people and businesses requiring documents witnessed or certified for use overseas.

Sport has always been an interest for Richard, particularly rugby as a player and spectator, yachting (a New Zealand representative in Flying Fifteens), squash and jogging for fitness and golf which Richard still plays regularly. Spare time is spent with friends and family including three daughters and seven grandchildren.
