Commerce Commission Publishes 2016 / 2017 Consumer Issues Report

The Commerce Commission has released its 2016/17 Consumer Issues Report. The report identifies key issues and emerging risks that have the potential to affect consumers in New Zealand. The report is based on consumer complaints received by the Commission within the last year as well as industry information about the wider consumer environment.

Some of the key findings and trends from the 2016/17 report include:

  • An increase in the number of complaints about Fair Trading Act issues such as pricing practices, misrepresentations about goods and services, guarantees and warranties.
  • Online purchases now comprise more than 40% of Fair Trading Act complaints received by the Commission.
  • Telecommunications continues to be the most the complained about industry with the number of complaints increasing by nearly a third on last year.
  • Domestic appliance retailers, motor vehicle traders, electricity retailers and supermarkets have also received high number of complaints from consumers.
  • In relation to consumer credit, complaints about irresponsible lending practices and high-cost short-term loan products are increasing.
